How Do Your Respond When Someone Asks "What Is Occupational Therapy?"

Happy Occupational Therapy Month! Every year in April, we celebrate OT by promoting the profession and raising public awareness.

Our AOTA members are experts in their field and at promoting the profession. So this year we want to ask you how you promote the profession. Every Tuesday in April we’re going to ask you an #OTMonth-related question on AOTA’s social media.

Here’s our first Tuesday question:

When you’re promoting OT Month, you might get asked “what is occupational therapy?” How do you respond? We love hearing your definitions.

To help get you started check out these threads on CommunOT:

What is your OT elevator speech?

How do you explain “occupations” when a client or caregiver seems confused?

Share how you articulate the distinct value of OT in the schools.

We love this idea from AOTA President Amy Lamb. Instead of focusing so much on a textbook definition, paint a picture of how you've helped a client return to an occupation they valued. How you turned a problem into a solution.

How Do You Respond When Someone Asks "What is Occupational Therapy?" Occupational Therapy is the use of assessment and intervention that helps to develop, recover and maintain the meaningful occupations, activities, of individuals, groups, and communities. Occupational Therapy goes deeper than physical therapy by being client focused, and therapeutic of ones well being. Occupational therapy is about teaching/assisting people how to work within their limitations so they can live and do things as independently as possible.
