How Can I Motivate My Clients to Participate in Occupational Therapy Sessions?

Do you find it difficult to motivate some of your clients? Are you looking for a way to get your clients more involved so they can meet their goals?

Client motivation and participation is key in occupational therapy. When you motivate your clients in therapy sessions they will understand and value occupational therapy as a means to help them return home and participate in activities that are important to them.

If you’re looking for an evidence-based way to increase client motivation, check out AOTA Continuing Education’s new training course—Enhanced-Medical Rehabilitation (E-MR): How to Engage and Motivate Your Clients.

This new structured approach applies the science of behavior change and the principles of rehabilitation intensity to clients’ occupation therapy programs.

By using occupation-centered goals determined by the client, this approach has been shown to increase interest in rehabilitation leading to a higher level of involvement in the experience and thus achieving better therapy results.

The online course, developed in partnership with the research team at Washington University in St. Louis, will provide you with the resources and skills to immediately begin this approach with your clients.

Practitioners who complete this course by successfully passing the exam are also eligible for the free digital badge that will let others know about the E—MR knowledge and skills that you possess.

As a student of OT, I am inspired most by what makes therapy client-centered.  I am learning a lot about barriers in the healthcare field as far as what insurance is willing to pay for.  I appreciate the information you have provided and look forward to tapping into this insight.  The last thing I want to do is get out into the field and be another OT that is basically asleep at the wheel and just "going through the motions."  One of my goals while using therapeutic use of self and building rapport with each client is that they will look forward to seeing me for therapy sessions.  Thank you for helping me through my journey!
